I've cleaned up Lagos in 100 days

Sanwo Olu

LAGOS State Governor, Mr BabajIde Sanwo-Olu, on Tuesday said his administration has succeeded in clearing mound of filth on major streets and highways across the state in its almost 100 days in office.

The governor made this declaration through the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Gbenga Omotoso, who spoke at a press conference held in Lagos, expressing delight at the modest achievements so far recorded by his administration.

“The most visible impact of the course of action this administration has taken so far in respect of the environment is the disappearance of heaps of garbage on major streets and highways across the state,” Omotoso said.

This was just as he assured that the state government would be more scientific about dumpsites, pointing out that right now the smoke was no longer bellowing from Olusosun Dumpsite.

“Government will be more scientific about dumpsites. You would notice that smoke is no longer from Olusosun.

“We wish to report that in order to validate the Executive Order on Environmental and Sanitation Matters, the government has taken a bold decision to expand Olusosun Dumpsite to 42 acres to accommodate more waste and ensure that trucks can have a quicker turnaround time.

“As I speak, the building under construction at the entrance of the Olusosun Dumpsite is ready and it would be commissioned on Wednesday, September 4th by His Excellency,” he said, adding that place would be used to train and retrain the staff and create more jobs for the people.

He said this was with the view of further strengthening the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) “to collect recyclable materials necessary.”

“In the same vein, LAWMA has begun a Lagos at 4 am programme that is aimed at stemming the tide of indiscriminate waste disposal across the metropolis. Also, the agency has acquired a Briquette facility, which can process about 1,700 kg of sawdust per hour, in Agbowa (Ikorodu division),” he further added.

Omotoso disclosed that the Lagos State Blue Box Recycling at the Simpson Transfer Loading Station, Lagos Island would be launched soon, saying this would be done to sustain current environmental regeneration momentum in the state.
