Akinlade Vs Dapo: supreme court gives date to rule

The Supreme Court will on Wednesday, December 18, hear the appeal filed by Hon. Adekunle Akinlade of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), challenging the election of Gov Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State, DAILY POST reports.

Akinlade had earlier dragged Abiodun before the Ogun State Election Tribunal and the Appeal Court sitting in Ibadan, alleging that Abiodun’s election was marred with irregularities and that the Governor lied in the Form CF001 he submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

But his petitions were dismissed by the two courts for lacking in merit.

Consequently, Akinlade proceeded to the apex court to test the strength of his case, expressing optimism that he would be favoured.

In a message signed by Ibrahim Gold, Director/HoD, Litigation at the Supreme Court, and made available to DAILY POST, it was gathered that the appeal: SC 1438/2019, has been listed for hearing on Wednesday.

The message reads: “Take notice that the above Appeal will be listed for hearing before the Supreme Court of Nigeria on Wednesday the 18th day of December, 2019.

“And further take notice that in accordance with the Supreme Court Rules, this Notice is deemed sufficiently served on you if it is delivered on your telephone.
Signed:
Ibrahim Gold
Director/HoD, Litigation.

...Says Govt Determined To Reduce Cultism, Other Vices

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has revealed plans by the State Government to upgrade Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education to a University of Education.

The Governor disclosed this on Monday when he received the newly elected Zonal Coordinators of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Zone D, led by Comrade Kappo Olawale at the Lagos House, Alausa.

Sanwo-Olu, in a close chat with the group assured them of the continuous commitment of his administration to the reforms of Education Sector stating that the sector has the "Lion's share" in the year 2020 budget.

He said: “We want to elevate Adesanya Ogunsanya College of Education to a University of Education. This is one of our plans as a government.”

“We are training all Primary School teachers and also recruiting new ones. We will ensure that the quality in our classrooms are the same. And this is based on development of teachers first. Once we are able to push that, we will also improve the quality of teaching. We will see better outcome and that will give us better pupils.

“We will also duplicate this in Secondary Schools across Lagos. We want to continue to reduce truancy, cultism and all those unhealthy acts amongst pupils. We will increase infrastructure in Schools.”

The Governor stressed that his administration will build new facilities for State institutions and complete the ones that are yet to be completed.

He urged the student leaders to ensure that they uphold peace in their various institutions and be good representatives of their citadels of learning.

“We want to have positive impacts at all levels of education but we need you to understand and appreciate the efforts of the government. To be able to speak to your fellow students to ensure that we continue to work in an environment where there is peace, harmony, understanding and collaboration".

The students were received by the Governor and his deputy Dr Obafemi Hamzat, Special Adviser on Education, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, Special Adviser on Tourism, Mr Solomon Bonu and Special Adviser on Civic Engagement, Mrs Folashade Adebowale-Owoeye.

Speaker Oluomo will be far more purposeful than Abiodun as Ogun Gov - Segun Sowunmi

After Saturday's attack on the Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun, the Spokesperson of Atiku Presidential Campaign Organisation, Segun Sowunmi, has once again 'fired another salvo' when he said Abiodun should resign if he could not run a sophisticated state like Ogun.

Sowunmi said with Abiodun's resignation, the state "will use the doctrine of necessity to swear in either (Abiodun's) Deputy Governor or the Speaker". saying "I trust that (the Speaker of Ogun State House of Assembly) Olakunle Oluomo will be far more purposeful than this joke going on in Ogun under the watch of HE Dapo Abiodun."

On Saturday, Sowunmi had accused Gov Abiodun of running his government on a snail slow speed, calling on stakeholders in Ogun State to call him to order.

According to him, he has since been attacked by apologists of the Governor, who he said were not pleased with his criticism, which he described as "a harmless note to encourage Mr. Governor and his bootlickers on the need to inject some speed to governance in his own interest, in the interest of our dear state and her good people."

In another statement released on Sunday evening, the Ogun State indigene said "everything has virtually come to a standstill since Sen. Ibikunle Amosun left office as Governor, with the kindergarten steps taken so far by his (Abiodun's) administration, emphasising that "within the (six months) period under review, Amosun had performed far far better than Dapo Abiodun."

Sowunmi, in his words, described some acclaimed Abiodun's achievements as "dubious" and falling below "Ogun Standard"; asking, "what exactly is delaying Dapo Abiodun? Or would he want Nigerians to believe he inherited a state of things different from the usual in this clime? Did our Governor inherit the security crisis in Zamfara? Even Governor Mattawalle has since settled down to real business. Or has he forgotten that 'Constituted Authority' in Ibadan did not exactly leave Seyi Makinde with a perfect system?"

Concluding, Sowunmi said he would write again in the next three months when Gov Abiodun would have spent nine months in office, expressing hope that things would have changed.

However, he told Abiodun: "But just in case you find out that you do not have the capacity to administer a state as sophisticated as Ogun, it would not be too late to throw in the towel."

Sowunmi's statement reads in full:
"Dapo Abiodun: Setting the records straight"
"When the all-inclusive, now clearly cosmetic, slow to settle, uninspiring administration of HE Dapo Abiodun started, I had suspected that the idea was, perhaps, to cage all potentially divergent opinions and strong voices in Ogun. I have now become satisfactorily convinced that an awkward situation of catastrophic proportion is before all lovers of our dear state.

"I had penned a harmless note to encourage Mr. Governor and his bootlickers on the need to inject some speed to governance in his own interest, in the interest of our dear state and her good people. I thought that as concerned indigenes, we owed him the duty of waking him up from slumber, and pointing his attention to the fact that, while his colleagues were busy settling down to their jobs like they would hand over tomorrow, he started out on a needless Thanksgiving parade, going from one church to the other, giving testimonies, from Redeemed, to Deeper Life, to London, not leaving out all other small altars.

"After three months, I thought that the 100 days mark had been missed, but felt that, perhaps, our Governor needed more time to convince right thinking Ogun indigenes that he was up to the task. I watched and listened to numerous people, mostly within his all-inclusive joke, complain and throw their hands in the air in utter disgust for what had befallen them, in terms of what has now unfolded to be an ill-thought-out scam that seems to hold no real promise after six months.

"I reasoned that before he would get stuck on one spot, even before taking the very first important step, it was a patriotic duty to admonish and encourage stakeholders to step in and aid him where necessary. To this end, I compared his activities in the first six months, to those of three former governors. I'm not surprised that sycophants who clearly have refused to see beyond their noses, while scrambling for whatever crumbs would fall from the coalition table, did not claim that the Dapo Abiodun government had performed better than the Olusegun Osoba administration, nor had they the guts to claim they had a chance of comparing themselves to Daniel.

"I, however, notice that the shameless lot picked on their immediate successor in the most careless and unstrategic manner, forgetting that Senator Ibikunle Amosun governed Ogun State on the platform of the same APC that gave birth to the Dapo Abiodun government. Well, this shows the kind of thinking caps the narrative managers of the current Governor have on their heads. This already explains why, rather than face governance, they place unnecessary, difficult-to-manage burdens on themselves without a clear direction of governance.

"Was I in Amosun’s government that I would tell a lie as to what we observed? I repeat with every sense of seriousness that, within the period under review, Amosun had performed far far better than Dapo Abiodun. Just take the bios of Amosun's commissioners, and you would agree that he was prepared for governance long before he won the election, with his ability to get such good hands to work with in record time, without having to hire an unending list of strange bed fellows to engage in a fruitless moonlight dance without drums.

"I ask again, in spite of the list of phony achievements released by his handlers, what exactly is delaying Dapo Abiodun? Or would he want Nigerians to believe he inherited a state of things different from the usual in this clime? Did our Governor inherit the security crisis in Zamfara? Even Governor Mattawalle has since settled down to real business. Or has he forgotten that 'Constituted Authority' in Ibadan did not exactly leave Seyi Makinde with a perfect system? Just to remind them, Oyo State indigenes, and Nigerians at large, are the ones giving their appreciation of Makinde's approach to governance. So, when did our dear Ogun State become this rudderless?

"Mr. Governor claims he created a job portal. This is sickening. Come on, that cannot, with due respect, be listed as an achievement in Ogun. To borrow Ibikunle Amosun's slogan, this is below our Ogun standard.

"He claims he is renovating a block per school. Is that not silly? Systemic thinking would have suggested that you finish a few schools before going to others. In case the incompetent fellows do not know how to score good points here, I would recommend the model used by Rauf Aregbesola in Osun; that is if they are not too proud to learn.

"He claims he is sharing money under some dubious arrangements termed okowo Dapo. He might please do himself a favour and ask OGD how the model of cooperative and community development was done; and I would particularly encourage him to ask about the matching grant scheme, so that he would stop irritating us, the good people of Ogun State, with laughable claims of achievements that are in no way near the 'A' standards we are used to.

"He claims he bought cars for the Police. The last time I checked, the profiteering venture has been lying waste on the grounds of the arcades for months. It will be news if he has delivered them to the Police. Even a Simpleton knows the kind of financial pressure that may tempt the Governor to run a "me and my cronies" government for a few months. But running this kind of government for six months? It is definitely unacceptable to any freeborn Ogun indigene, not minding those waiting on his never coming appointments.

"He claims he has been given numerous awards. Well, good luck to him and those awarding him for non-peformance. As far as we can see, everything has virtually come to a standstill since Amosun left office as Governor. With the kindergarten steps taken so far by his administration, Dapo Abiodun has almost made a magician out of Amosun because of what appears as his crass incompetence.

"As for my note to Ogun Stakeholders, I believe the message is very clear. Governance must be engaged and questions must be asked. One thousand Dapo Abioduns and his lickspittles can never silence the critical voices in Ogun State.

"On this note, I would say: see you in another three months. At least, by then, Mr. Governor, it would have been nine months of your government. Let's hope the situation would have changed. But just in case you find out that you do not have the capacity to administer a state as sophisticated as Ogun, it would not be too late to throw in the towel. We will use the doctrine of necessity to swear in either your deputy governor or the Speaker. I trust that Oluomo will be far more purposeful than this joke going on in Ogun under the watch of HE Dapo Abiodun."

Jubilations as court upholds IGP Adamu's power to recruit 10.000 constables

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday upheld the power of the Nigeria Police Force and the Police Council under the control of the Inspector-General of Police to recruit constables into the NPF.

Justice Inyang Ekwo, in his judgment, dismissed the suit filed by the Police Service Commission to challenge the power of the NPF and the IGP, Mohammed Adamu, to carry out the ongoing exercise of recruiting 10,000 police constables.

The judge held that the PSC’s case lacked merit.

The judge held that the law guiding the enlistment of constables into the NPF was the Nigeria Police Regulations of 1968, issued by the Nigerian President in accordance with the provisions of Section 46 of the Police Act 1967 (No 41), providing for the organisation and administration of the police force.

Police affairs ministry wants to recruit 400,000 policemen soon

The Ministry of Police Affairs said it has received a matching order from the Presidency to recruit additional 400,000 personnel into the Nigeria Police force to address the manpower shortage in the service.

Head of Press and Public Relations Unit of the ministry, Odutayo Oluseyi, who made this known in a statement said already the minister Mohammed Dingyadi, has set up a 13-man Ministerial Project Coordination Committee to conduct the recruitment  process.

The presidential directive may end the ongoing legal tussle between the Police Service Commission and the Nigeria police force over which agency had the right to carry out the recruitment of police personnel.

Oluseye in a statement issued in Abuja, said.

Members of the committee who were drawn from the both the ministry and the police, are expected to work out appropriate programmes and projects to accomplish the assigned priorities and deliverables.

He said the police affairs minister had during the inauguration of the committee members in Abuja, told them that providing security for all citizens was among the nine main priority areas of the Buhari led government.

According to him, “Dingyadi said, “It is instructive to point out these government priorities have been developed in line with the vision of this administration which is targeted towards building a prosperous economy, eradicating corruption and providing security for all.”

The statement added that Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Nnamdi Mbaeri disclosed that during the Presidential Retreat, a committee was constituted under the Chairmanship of the Vice President to review the performance of the government during the last four years and also articulate a programme of action which would provide strategic direction for the Administration’s next level agenda, 2019-2023.

Continuing, he said the committee developed the document titled “Delivering on government’s priorities 2019-2023″ that featured nine overarching government priorities, including security.

Mbaeri said, “The police affairs ministry was assigned specific priorities and deliverables including full implementation of the Community Policing Policy, the recruitment of additional 400,000 policemen across the country, establishment of a Federal Public-Private Security Trust Fund amongst others.”

According to the permanent secretary, it was in the bid to effectively and adequately implement these priorities and deliverables for the benefit of Nigerians that the ministry considered it imperative to constitute this Ministerial Project Coordination Committee which was tasked with carrying out specified duties.

“The Chairman of the committee, and Director of Police Reforms Department in the ministry,  Mohammed Yahaya, pledged on behalf of the committee to carry out their duties efficiently and effectively, saying it was a rare opportunity that had been given to them to participate in the architectural shaping of the security of the country”.
